“When I got home that night as my wife served dinner, I held her hand and said, I’ve got something to tell you. She sat down and ate quietly. Again I observed the hurt in her eyes.

Suddenly I didn’t know how to open my mouth. But I had to let her know what I was thinking. I want a divorce. I raised the topic calmly. She didn’t seem to be annoyed by my words, instead she asked me softly, why?

I avoided her question. This made her angry. She threw away the chopsticks and shouted at me, you are not a man! That night, we didn’t talk to each other. She was weeping. I knew she wanted to find out what had happened to our marriage. But I could hardly give her a satisfactory answer; she had lost my heart to Jane. I didn’t love her anymore. I just pitied her!

With a deep sense of guilt, I drafted a divorce agreement which stated that she could own our house, our car, and 30% stake of my company. She glanced at it and then tore it into pieces. The woman who had spent ten years of her life with me had become a stranger. I felt sorry for her wasted time, resources and energy but I could not take back what I had said for I loved Jane so dearly. Finally she cried loudly in front of me, which was what I had expected to see. To me her cry was actually a kind of release. The idea of divorce which had obsessed me for several weeks seemed to be firmer and clearer now.

The next day, I came back home very late and found her writing something at the table. I didn’t have supper but went straight to sleep and fell asleep very fast because I was tired after an eventful day with Jane. When I woke up, she was still there at the table writing. I just did not care so I turned over and was asleep again.

In the morning she presented her divorce conditions: she didn’t want anything from me, but needed a month’s notice before the divorce. She requested that in that one month we both struggle to live as normal a life as possible. Her reasons were simple: our son had his exams in a month’s time and she didn’t want to disrupt him with our broken marriage.

This was agreeable to me. But she had something more, she asked me to recall how I had carried her into out bridal room on our wedding day. She requested that every day for the month’s duration I carry her out of our bedroom to the front door ever morning. I thought she was going crazy. Just to make our last days together bearable I accepted her odd request.

I told Jane about my wife’s divorce conditions. . She laughed loudly and thought it was absurd. No matter what tricks she applies, she has to face the divorce, she said scornfully.

My wife and I hadn’t had any body contact since my divorce intention was explicitly expressed. So when I carried her out on the first day, we both appeared clumsy. Our son clapped behind us, daddy is holding mommy in his arms. His words brought me a sense of pain. From the bedroom to the sitting room, then to the door, I walked over ten meters with her in my arms. She closed her eyes and said softly; don’t tell our son about the divorce. I nodded, feeling somewhat upset. I put her down outside the door. She went to wait for the bus to work. I drove alone to the office.

On the second day, both of us acted much more easily. She leaned on my chest. I could smell the fragrance of her blouse. I realized that I hadn’t looked at this woman carefully for a long time. I realized she was not young any more. There were fine wrinkles on her face, her hair was graying! Our marriage had taken its toll on her. For a minute I wondered what I had done to her.

On the fourth day, when I lifted her up, I felt a sense of intimacy returning. This was the woman who had given ten years of her life to me. On the fifth and sixth day, I realized that our sense of intimacy was growing again. I didn’t tell Jane about this. It became easier to carry her as the month slipped by. Perhaps the everyday workout made me stronger.

She was choosing what to wear one morning. She tried on quite a few dresses but could not find a suitable one. Then she sighed, all my dresses have grown bigger. I suddenly realized that she had grown so thin, that was the reason why I could carry her more easily.

Suddenly it hit me… she had buried so much pain and bitterness in her heart. Subconsciously I reached out and touched her head.

Our son came in at the moment and said, Dad, it’s time to carry mom out. To him, seeing his father carrying his mother out had become an essential part of his life. My wife gestured to our son to come closer and hugged him tightly. I turned my face away because I was afraid I might change my mind at this last minute. I then held her in my arms, walking from the bedroom, through the sitting room, to the hallway. Her hand surrounded my neck softly and naturally. I held her body tightly; it was just like our wedding day.

But her much lighter weight made me sad. On the last day, when I held her in my arms I could hardly move a step. Our son had gone to school. I held her tightly and said, I hadn’t noticed that our life lacked intimacy. I drove to office…. jumped out of the car swiftly without locking the door. I was afraid any delay would make me change my mind…I walked upstairs. Jane opened the door and I said to her, Sorry, Jane, I do not want the divorce anymore.

She looked at me, astonished, and then touched my forehead. Do you have a fever? She said. I moved her hand off my head. Sorry, Jane, I said, I won’t divorce. My marriage life was boring probably because she and I didn’t value the details of our lives, not because we didn’t love each other anymore. Now I realize that since I carried her into my home on our wedding day I am supposed to hold her until death do us apart. Jane seemed to suddenly wake up. She gave me a loud slap and then slammed the door and burst into tears. I walked downstairs and drove away. At the floral shop on the way, I ordered a bouquet of flowers for my wife. The salesgirl asked me what to write on the card. I smiled and wrote, I’ll carry you out every morning until death do us apart.

That evening I arrived home, flowers in my hands, a smile on my face, I run up stairs, only to find my wife in the bed - dead. My wife had been fighting CANCER for months and I was so busy with Jane to even notice. She knew that she would die soon and she wanted to save me from the whatever negative reaction from our son, in case we push through with the divorce.— At least, in the eyes of our son—- I’m a loving husband….

The small details of your lives are what really matter in a relationship. It is not the mansion, the car, property, the money in the bank. These create an environment conducive for happiness but cannot give happiness in themselves. So find time to be your spouse’s friend and do those little things for each other that build intimacy. Do have a real happy marriage!

Keluar rumah : Beritahu atau mintak izin suami dahulu..?

"Alhamdulillah, sejak kebelakangan ini, saya makin banyak menerima kes daripada klien lelaki. Bukannya seronok kerana berpeluang bertemujanji dengan lelaki tetapi bersyukur kerana saya diberikan kepercayaan untuk mendengar dan memberikan jalan penyelesaian terhadap kes-kes mereka. Terkini, seorang suami bertemujanji menerusi penggilan telefon, meminta kepastian tentang ketaatan yang wajib bagi seorang isteri terhadap suaminya termasuk tentang izin keluar rumah dan melakukan sesuatu tindakan.

Menurut lelaki ini, isterinya selalu memberitahunya tentang sesuatu tindakan atau untuk keluar rumah tika perbuatan atau tindakan tersebut hampir berlaku. Contohnya: "I dah janji dengan kawan nak ke pecan jam 3 ni." Masa tu, hanya beberapa minit ke jam 3 dan si isteri dah pun bersiap nak keluar. Nak larang? Mesti bergaduh besar la, katanya.

Saya yakin, bukan lelaki tersebut sahaja menghadapi masalah sedemikian kan. Ya! Tindakan dan perlakuan si isteri yang serupa kes tadi bukanlah satu tindakan yang dibenarkan oleh syarak. Hukum syarak menetapkan seorang isteri perlu mendapatkan izin suami untuk melakukan apa juga tindakan dan perbuatan termasuk untuk keluar daripada rumah walaupun untuk bekerja, ke pasar atau tika berdepan dengan kes-kes kecemasan. Diriwayatkan pada zaman Rasulullah SAW, seorang isteri diberikan pengiktirafan oleh baginda Rasul kerana tahap ketaatan yang tidak berbelah bahagi kepada si suami. Menurut riwayat, si suami terlibat dalam perang berjihad ke jalan Allah.

Dalam tempoh tersebut, si isteri yang ditinggalkan di rumah didatangi seorang saudaranya daripada kampung mengkhabarkan tentang ayahnya yang sakit tenat. Si isteri hanya menjawab: "Baliklah dahulu. Suamiku tiada di rumah." Tak lama, saudara tadi berjumpa sekali lagi dengan si isteri, mengkhabarkan ayahnya telah meninggal dunia. Si isteri masih berikan jawapan yang sama: "Baliklah dahulu. Suamiku tiada di rumah." Tidak lama, si suami pulang daripada berjuang. Si isteri memberikan sepenuh layanan kepada si suami termasuk layanan intimasi. Bila yakin si suami mendapat layanan sebaiknya, barulah si isteri mengkhabarkan berita tentang ayahnya. Saya yakin, anda boleh baca tentang kisah ini dalam banyak buku panduan wanita dan isteri solehah.

Dalam konteks perbincangan kali ini, kisah ini adalah sebagai panduan betapa seorang isteri perlukan izin daripada suami dalam setiap perkara hatta kes kecemasan sekalipun. Memang itu kehendak hukum syarak, bukan kata saya atau kata alim ulamak lainnya. Dapatkan izin ya dan bukan beritahu. Terdapat perbezaan yang besar antara dapatkan izin dan beritahu. Kalau anda beritahu dan suami tak izinkan, anda tak boleh lakukan perkara yang anda hajati tersebut. Lantaran, bagi memudahkan urusan dalam kehidupan seharian, saya selalu praktikkan meminta izin daripada suami secara umum: Saya mohon izin untuk keluar rumah bekerja dan lakukan perkara-perkara yang penting dan perlu untuk keperluan diri dan keluarga. Bukan bererti dengan izin umum tersebut, tak perlu lagi izin suami. Masih perlu tetapi izin umum tersebut jika dalam keadaan suami tiada di depan mata saya atau sukar nak hubungi suami.

Namun, dalam zaman serba mudah dan canggih ini, tiada erti susah dan sukar nak dapatkan izin suami. Sekelip mata, anda boleh maklumkan dan dapatkan izin suami. Paling penting, perancangan awal. Jangan pulak dah janji dulu dengan kawan kemudian baru minta izin dan cakap pulak, dah janji dengan kawan. Itu ertinya memaksa suami bagi izin. Kalau izin dalam keadaan terpaksa, sama lah seperti izin tanpa rela dan redha suami. Jika terjadi apa-apa kesan daripada izin terpaksa tersebut, anda boleh dinobatkan sebagai isteri nusyuz.

Walaupun begitu, terdapat pengecualian di dalam perkara tertentu iaitu hal keganasan rumahtangga, tika membelanjakan wang hasil pendapatan sendiri dan hal-hal keselamatan. Jika anda adalah mangsa keganasan rumahtangga, sering dipukul dan dibelasah oleh suami, tak perlulah dapatkan izin suami untuk keluar rumah nak buat aduan ke balai polis dan dapatkan pemeriksaan perubatan. Janganlah lurus bendul pulak. Jika anda adalah mangsa keganasan dan anda mula bimbang dengan keselamatan diri anda dan anak-anak, anda boleh keluar daripada rumah walau tanpa pengetahuan atau izin suami tetapi pastikan anda buat aduan ke balai polis berhampiran dahulu. Nyatakan tujuan anda keluar kerana bimbangkan keselamatan diri anda dan anak (jika ada) disebabkan tindakan suami yang bertindak membahayakan keselamatan dan nyawa anda. Kemudian, buat aduan ke pejabat agama pula. Ingat!! Hanya yang membahayakan keselamatan. Jangan merajuk ja dah keluar rumah kemudian buat laporan polis.

Dalam membelanjakan hasil pendapatan sendiri, tak perlukan izin suami tetapi suami boleh memantau dan campurtangan jika perbelanjaan yang dibuat bukanlah perbelanjaan yang perlu dan wajar menurut syarak. Dalam kes keselamatan berkaitan penyakit atau kelahiran, jika doktor mengesahkan anda perlu lakukan sesuatu demi keselamatan nyawa anda tetapi suami tidak izinkan, tika ini anda boleh mengenepikan izin suami. Dengan syarat, membahayakan nyawa. Bukannya kemaslahatan sosial atau kewangan ya...Perkahwinan adalah perkongsian, hormatilah pasangan anda dengan dapatkan izin untuk lakukan sesuatu, bukan hanya izin suami tetapi juga izin dan beritahu isteri... kerana isteri berhak ke atas anda, sama seperti anda juga berhak ke atas isteri anda...

Inilah cerita benar. Cerita benar seorang penulis yang Berjaya. Beginilah

kisahnya...

Entahlah apa yang selalu bermain pada fikiran ayah. Apabila saya ingin

pulang kembali ke kota, dia kerap minta duit. Seakan-akan mendesak....

" Ada duit? Minta ayah sedikit.."

Saya masih ingat waktu itu kehidupan saya terlalu sukar. Untuk mendapat

seratus ringgit di dalam poket pada satu-satu masa pun payah. Kalau balik

kampung selalunya duit yang ada hanya cukup-cukup tambang. Mujurlah, isteri

dan anak-anak saya sudah faham. Alhamdulilah mereka 'sporting' dan tidak

banyak meragam.

"Emak, ayah asyik minta duit. Bukan tak mahu bagi, tapi saya memang tak ada

duit," Bisik saya kepada emak. Emak seperti biasa, berwajah selamba, sukar

ditembak reaksinya.

" Bagilah beberapa yang ada," cadang emak pendek.

"Takkan 5 ringgit?"

Emak mengganguk.

Saya rasa bersalah untuk memberi ayah wang sebanyak itu. Apalah yang boleh

dibeli dengan wang 5 ringgit....Tapi kerana tidak mahu menghampakan harapa

ayah dan ikutkan cadangan emak, saya gagahi juga memberinya.

Ayah selalunya tersenyum menerima pemberian saya. Tetapi yang mengejutkan

ialah apabila kami sekeluarga berada dalam perut bas dalam perjalanan pulang

ke kota. Di kocek anak saya sudah terselit wang sepuluh ringgit. Siapa yang

bagi kalau bukan ayah? 10 tolak 5, saya masih 'untung' 5 ringgit. Geli hati

mengenangkannya.

Begitulah selalunya tahun demi tahun. Apabila kami pulang ziarah ke kampung,

saya akan memberi pemintaan ayah. Kengkadang terlupa, tetapi ayah akan

selalu mengigatkan. Akhirnya, saya memang sediakan peruntukan khas untuk

diberikan kepada ayah setiap kali pulang kampung. Kedudukan ekonomi saya

yang masih goyah kekadang hanya mengizinkan wang dua ringgit untuk diberikan

kepada ayah. Ironinya, ayah tetap dengan pemintaannya dan tetap tersenyum

apabila menerima. Tidak kira berapa jumlahnya. Emak terus-terusan selamba.

Saya masih sukar menandingi ketajaman rasa seorang isteri (emak) dalam

memahami hati suaminya (ayah).

Begitupun setiap kali dalam perjalanan pulang, kocek anak saya akan jadi

sasaran. Kekadang itulah duit pelengkap membeli tiket pulang. Ayah akan

setiap memasukkan duit yang melebihi jumlah saya berikan kepadanya. Saya

tidak mengambil masa lama untuk memahami apa maksud tersirat disebalik

perlakuan ayah itu. Dia meminta wang pada saya bukan kerana 'tidak ada',

tetapi dia ada sesuatu yang lebih besar ingin dicapainya atau

disampaikannya.

Namun, secara bertahap-tahap buku tulisan saya semakin mendapat sambutan.

Bukan itu sahaja, perniagaan yang saya mulakan secara kecil-kecilan semakin

membesar. Kalau dulu kami pulang ke kampung dengan bas, tetapi selepas

beberapa tahun saya pulang dengan kereta milik sendiri. Saya masih ingat

komen ayah ketika saya pulang dengan kereta kecil Kancil milik kami sendiri.

"Nanti, besarlah kereta kamu ini...." ujur ayah senyum.

Apapun saya tetap memenuhi permintaan ayah setiap kali pulang ke kampung.

Wang saya dahulukan kepadanya. Dan ayah juga konsisten dengan sikapnya, ada

sahaja wang yang diselitkan dalam kocek anak saya.

" Eh tak payahlah ayah..." sekarang saya mula berani bersuara. Ekonomi

keluarga sudah agak stabil. Malu rasanya mengambil duit ayah walaupun

perantaraan pemberian datuk kepada cucunya. Saya tahu dan sedar, hakikatnya

ayah hendak memberi kepada saya sejak dulu, tetapi sengaja atau tidak ingin

saya merasa segan, duit diberi melalui anak.

"Kenapa, dah kaya?" usik ayah. Hendak tak hendak, duit dikocek anak tetap

diselitkannya. Cuma sekarang bezanya, duit itu tidak lagi 'dikebas' oleh

saya. Dan dalam hati, saya mula berasa senang kerana jumlah yang saya

berikan kepada ayah, kini sudah melebihi apa yang mampu diselitkan ke kocek

anak saya. Tidak semacam dulu lagi, duit pemberian ayah kepada anak saya

sentiasa melebihi duit pemberian saya kepadanya.

Masin sungguh mulut ayah. Tidak sampai tiga tahun, kami bertukar kereta!. Di

samping menulis, saya menjadi penerbit. Perniagaan semakin rancak. Oleh

sebab bilangan anak bertambah dan keperluan kerja yang meningkat saya sudah

membeli MPV utuk kegunaan harian. Anak-anak mula menjejak menara gading.

Kehidupan semakin laju dan aktiviti semakin rancak. Namun sibuk sekalipun

saya tetap pulang menziarahi ayah dan ibu. Anehnya ayah tetap memberi kepada

anak saya walaupun kini saya telah dikenali sebagai korporat yang berjaya.

Rupa-rupanya, ayah memberi bukan kerana kekurangan atau kelebihan kami,

tetapi dia MEMBERI KERANA ALLAH. Mencontohi Allah al-Wahhab itu!

Anda ingin tahu apa pesan penulis itu kepada saya? Ya, mari kongsi bersama :

" Kini aku benar-benar faham bahawa ibu ayah yang tua bukan beban dalam

kehidupan di dunia, lebih-lebih lagi dalam kehidupan di akhirat. Mereka

bukan 'liabiliti' tetapi sebenarnya aset untuk kita (walaupun istilah itu

sebenarnya kurang atau tidak tepat kerana ibubapa bukan benda). Rugi betul

siapa yang mempunyai ibu bapa yang telah tua tetapi mengabaikannya.

"memberi kepada ibu bapa hakikatnya memberi kepada diri sendiri. Walaupun

itu bukan niat kita ketika memberi, tetapi percayalah rezeki berganda akan

pulang kepada kita semula. DOA MEREKA MUSTAJAB. Harapan mereka kenyataan. Kasih mereka bekalan. Benarlah sepertimana sabda Rasulullah s.a.w, keredhaan Allah terletak kepada keredhaan ibu bapa."

Baiklah, inilah sebenarnya rahsia 'perniagaan' yang jarang-jarang

diperkatakan oleh tokoh korporat. Juga tidak pernah ditulis dalam mana-mana

buku perniagaan. Masih punya ibubapa? MEMBERILAH KEPADA MEREKA. Tidak ada?

Tidak mengapa, memberilah kepada anak-anak anda. Tidak ada juga? Memberilah kepada sesiapa sahaja. Kita sentiasa berfikir untuk memberi. Memberi kepada orang lain bererti memberi kepada diri kita sendiri walaupun itu bukan maksud kita ketika mula memberi !

Kisah Imam Ahmad & pembuat roti by Blog Teh Secawan

Pada suatu malam Imam Ahmad pergi ke masjid untuk bermalam di masjid tetapi penjaga masjid tidak mengizinkannya. Dia pun kata “Aku akan tidur tepat di tempat pijakan tapak kakiku”.

Seorang pembuat roti datang dan kasihan melihatnya dan menawarkan Imam Ahmad bermalam di rumahnya. Pembuat roti itu menjamunya. Ketika pembuat roti itu menguli roti, dia sentiasa beristighfar membuatkan Imam Ahmad merasa kagum. Esok subuh, Imam Ahmad bertanya kepada pembuat roti “Adakah engkau dapat hasil dengan istighfarmu itu?” (dia memang tahu kelebihan istighfar, sekadar bertanya faedah buat lelaki itu). Pembuat roti kata setakat ini semua yang didoanya tercapai kecuali satu iaitu niat untuk berjumpa Imam Ahmad.

Imam Ahmad kata “Akulah Imam Ahmad. Demi Allah aku benar-benar ditarik ke sini untukmu.”

Dosa Meninggalkan Solat Fardhu :

1. Solat Subuh : satu kali meninggalkan akan dimasukkan ke dalam neraka selama 30 tahun yang sama dengan 60.000 tahun di dunia.

2. Solat Zuhur : satu kali meninggalkan dosanya sama dengan membunuh 1.000 orang umat islam.

3. Solat Ashar : satu kali meninggalkan dosanya sama dengan menutup/meruntuhkan ka’bah.

4. Solat Magrib : satu kali meninggalkan dosanya sama dengan berzina dengan orangtua.

5. Solat Isya : satu kali meninggalkan tidak akan di redhai Allah SWT tinggal di bumi atau di bawah langit serta makan dan minum dari nikmatnya.

6 Siksa di Dunia Orang yang Meninggalkan Solat Fardhu :

1. Allah SWT mengurangi keberkatan umurnya.

2. Allah SWT akan mempersulit rezekinya.

3. Allah SWT akan menghilangkan tanda/cahaya soleh dari raut wajahnya.

4. Orang yang meninggalkan solat tidak mempunyai tempat di dalam islam.

5. Amal kebaikan yang pernah dilakukannya tidak mendapatkan pahala dari Allah SWT.

6. Allah tidak akan mengabulkan doanya.

3 Siksa Orang yang Meninggalkan Solat Fardhu Ketika Menghadapi Sakratul Maut :

1. Orang yang meninggalkan solat akan menghadapi sakratul maut dalam keadaan hina.

1. Orang yang meninggalkan solat di hari kiamat akan dibelenggu oleh malaikat.

Mengenai balasan bagi orang yang meninggalkan Solat Fardu: "Rasulullah SAW, diperlihatkan pada suatu kaum yang membenturkan kepala mereka pada batu, Setiap kali benturan itu menyebabkan kepala pecah, kemudian ia kembali kepada keadaan semula dan mereka tidak terus berhenti melakukannya. Lalu Rasulullah bertanya: "Siapakah ini wahai Jibril"? Jibril menjawab: "Mereka ini orang yang berat kepalanya untuk menunaikan Solat fardhu". (Hadits Riwayat Tabrani, sanad shahih)

Cancer Update from Johns Hopkins

1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size.

2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person's lifetime.

3. When the person's immune system is strong the cancer cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumors.

4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic, but also to environmental, food and lifestyle factors.

5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet to eat more adequately and healthy, 4-5 times/day and by including supplements will strengthen the immune system.

6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow, gastrointestinal tract etc, and can cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc.

7. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs.

8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often reduce tumor size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and radiation do not result in more tumor destruction.

9. When the body has too much toxic burden from chemotherapy and radiation the immune system is either compromised or destroyed, hence the person can succumb to various kinds of infections and complications.

10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other sites.

11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply.

*CANCER CELLS FEED ON:

a. Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc are made with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural substitute would be Manuka honey or molasses, but only in very small amounts. Table salt has a chemical added to make it white in color. Better alternative is Bragg's aminos or sea salt.

b. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and substituting with unsweetened soy milk cancer cells are being starved.

c. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little other meat, like chicken. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer.

d. A diet made of fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline environment. About 20% can be from cooked food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most vegetables including bean sprouts) and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C).

e. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine. Green tea is a better alternative e and has cancer fighting properties. Water-best to drink purified water, or filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it.

12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines becomes putrefied and leads to more toxic buildup.

13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the body's killer cells to destroy the cancer cells.

14. Some supplements build up the immune system (IP6, Flor-ssence, Essiac, anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, EFAs etc.) to enable the bodies own killer cells to destroy cancer cells. Other supplements like vitamin E are known to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body's normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or unneeded cells.

15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. Anger, un-forgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy life.

16. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer cells.

1. No plastic containers in micro.

2. No water bottles in freezer.

3. No plastic wrap in microwave.

Johns Hopkins has recently sent this out in its newsletters. This information is being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center as well. Dioxin chemicals cause cancer, especially breast cancer. Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies. Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic. Recently, Dr Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital , was on a TV program to explain this health hazard. He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us. He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers. This especially applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body. Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food. You get the same results, only without the dioxin. So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else. Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. It's just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc. He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper The dioxin problem is one of the reasons.

Kesah ini betul2 terjadi kat Penang

Ingat lagi tak dgn kes Ms Canny Ong yang dirogol dan dibunuh??

Kisah nya..ada seorang perempuan ni berhenti dekat stesen gas "pay-at-the-pump" untuk isi minyak..sebaik saja dia siap isi minyak tu dan nak beredar,seorang pekerja kat situ buat pngumuman yang kad kredit perempuan ni ada problem sikit..pekerja tu suruh perempuan ni masuk ke dalam untuk bayar..tapi perempuan ni confused la sebab transaksi menunjukkan yang pembayaran kad kredit dia diluluskan dan tak ada masaalah apa2 pun.. so perempuan tu bagitau la pekerja tu dan dia pun bersedia nak beredar ke kereta dia balik..tapi pekerja tu tetap bertegas dan suruh dia masuk dalam..perempuan tu pun decided untuk masuk ke dalam...sebaik aje dia masuk kat dalam..dia mula marah kat pekerja tu..

lalu pekerja tu suruh dia bertenang dan bagitau hal sebenarnya.. .nak tau apa?

sebenarnya masa perempuan tu dok isi minyak,pekerja tu nampak ada laki menyelinap kat belakang kereta perempuan tu dan pekerja tu dah pun telepon polis..

perempuan tu pun apalagi, takut la..dia pun try intai dan dia nampak pintu kereta dia terbuka dan lelaki tu keluar dari kereta dia..

Sekarang ni..ada laporan yg mengatakan yg sekang ni ada gang yang amik body part orang pompuan..salah satu cara diorang adalah dgn menyelinap masuk kereta ornag perempuan masa perempuan tu tengah pump gas atau beli barang kat kedai TGH2 MLAM!!

kemudian,dia orang akan potong kaki perempuan tu untuk memudahkan diorang culik dan bunuh perempuan tu..

satu cara lagi pulak,dia orang akan masuk kedalam kereta yg tak ada orang dan tak berkunci kemudian culik perempuan tu dan bunuh dia orang.

Semalam pun ada Crime Investigation di Astro menceritakan kes yg sama di Hong Kong . Tapi perlakunya adalah pemandu teksi yang mengambil penumpang perempuan selepas lepas tengan malam. Memang ngeri.

hmmm rangup... tapi nak beli taug...eh tu kene buat eksperimen dulu la.

beli sket, jgn makan dulu sebaliknya simpan dulu utk 3 hari. pastu cuba bau taugeh tu lepas 3 hari camane. dan kalau boleh jgn beli taugeh yg kaler putih berseri tu.

kepututsan yg mungkin boleh didapati...
lepas 3 hari bau taugeh tu hanching semacam.
bermakna taugeh tu disiram dgn urine aka air kencing.
dan air urine tu la jugak menyebabkan kaler putih berseri.
kalau nak tau taugeh keluaran bumiputera senang aje.
kaler dia mcm kekuningan sket dan cepat layu serta kurang rangup, sebabnya
langsung tak guna urine sebagai baja.

ni info dari pegawai opis aku yg pernah buat lawatan ke pusat2 penanaman
taugeh dibeberapa negeri tertentu yg diusahakan oleh cha ya nun alip.

There once was a little boy who had a bad temper.
His Father gave him a bag of nails and told him that
every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into
the back of the fence.

The first day the boy had
driven 37 nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks,
as he learned to control his anger, the
number of nails hammered daily gradually dwindled down He
discovered it
was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails
into the fence.
Finally the day came when the boy didn't lose his
temper at all.

He told his father about it and
the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for
each day that he
was able to hold his temper.

The days passed and the young
boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails
were gone.

The father took his son by the
hand and led him to the fence. He said, 'You

How to Take Care of Kittens

Kittens have unique and wonderfully playful personalities. If you have decided to adopt a kitten, there are steps to take that will keep your kitten healthy and happy.

According to the web site "All Creatures/Kitten Care", written by David E. Hammmet, DVM, a kitten will require several vaccinations between eight and sixteen weeks of age. These vaccinations will guard against upper respiratory illnesses, feline leukemia, rabies, and feline panleukopenia. Without these vaccinations a kitten can become seriously ill and possibly die.

"Kitten Care" also recommends talking to your veterinarian about medications for preventing and controlling internal parasites. Parasites that can infect a kitten are tapeworms, coccidia, giardia, roundworms, and hookworms. A kitten infected with these parasites will experience vomiting, diarrhea, and can become extremely ill.

The same article recommends checking the kitten's skin for external parasites such as ear mites, ticks, and fleas. There are very good prescription products available that are given monthly to prevent and control fleas and ticks.

Talk to your veterinarian and find out which one is right for your pet. If your kitten is scratching its ears excessively it may have ear mites. A prescription is available from your veterinarian to eliminate ear mites.

Cats and kittens generally do not overeat, so food should be made available at all times. Feed your kitten a good quality food. This will ensure the kitten is getting the right amount
of vitamins and minerals necessary for growth. Avoid feeding your kitten table scraps. Table scraps will cause a kitten to become overweight, and the kitten may not get the proper nutrition it requires.

Training a kitten to use a litter box is generally easy. Make sure the litter box contains enough litter for digging and burying. About two to three inches is sufficient.

Place the kitten in the litter box and gently guide the kitten's paw through the litter. This will teach the kitten what it is suppose to be doing.

The kitten will instinctively know what to do next. Scoop out any solid waste each day, and distribute any wet litter evenly in the box to allow it to dry.

The litter box should be completely changed each week. Scrub the box using hot, soapy water before adding fresh litter. Scoopable litter is very convenient because the box will not have to be completely changed as often.

If your kitten suddenly stops using the litter box this could be a sign of a bladder infection, and your kitten will need to been seen by a veterinarian for treatment.

Alfred Recommends:

The bodies of kittens are in the developing stages. The cells are forming
at a rapid pace, and the DNA and RNA within these cells are being
"programmed" so they will know the blueprint for how to build a cell
that will eventually replace that first one.

In order for cells to build DNA & RNA, certain proteins, minerals,
and enzymes are necessary to be present, along with pure water and oxygen.

If these are not available to the cell in the right amounts, and Quality,
a cell will be formed that is a bit malformed or defective.

When the fetus was in the mother's womb, the cells were fed from the
mother's blood. Now, the cells must be formed from the ingredients in
the food the kitten eats.

If the food does not contain the right ingredients the kitten needs, then
obviously the cells will not have the proper nutrients to build the strongest
and healthiest cell possible.

Millions of cells make up what we call organs. If these cells are malformed
or defective, then we have an organ with a tissue structure that is weak
and unable to perform to capacity or is susceptible to disease.

Does this make sense to you?

If so, then we would like to suggest that a kitten needs an excellent quality
food with a very wide range of nutrients in it.

You know that cats are carnivores, meaning they are meat eaters. They
don't have the ability to manufacture proteins in their liver as dogs and
humans do, thus they have to get their proteins from food.

Complete proteins come from meat sources. Incomplete proteins come
from grains. Incomplete proteins do not have all the amino acids present
required to form what we call a complete protein.

Also you will want to consider the presence of harsh chemical preservatives
that are in some foods, such as BHA, BHT, and ethoxyquin. All have been
proven to play a role in various degenerative diseases such as kidney
and liver disease, and cancer.

Now, what do you believe would be better for your little kitten, a food
that has a cancer causing agent, or a food that has all natural
preservatives?

Our suggestion then is to look for a kitten food that has at least 2 to 3
meat sources of proteins to every one grain source.

And to look for a food that has all natural preservatives instead of toxic
chemicals.

Warning for all parents/grandparents, a friend sent this to me and I thought it was important enough to send on.....we all know someone with children -

Yesterday, my youngest daughter, Halle who is just 4 years old, was rushed to the ER by her father for being severely lethargic and incoherent in her classroom.He was called to her school by the school secretary who said that she was 'VERY VERY SICK ' !

He told me that when he arrived at her classroom, Halle was barely sitting in the chair. She couldn't hold her own head up and when he looked into her eyes, she couldn't focus them.

He immediately scooped her up and rushed her to the closest ER, and then called me. When he got there, they ran blood test after blood test and did x-rays,every test imaginable. Her white blood cell count was normal, nothing was out of the ordinary When I arrived at the ER, the doctor there told us that he had done everything that he could do so he was transferring her to Saint Francis
Hospital for further tests.

Right as we were leaving in the ambulance, her teacher arrived at the ER and told us that after questioning Halle 's classmates, she had found out that our little girl had licked liquid hand sanitizer off of her hands !!

Hand sanitizer, of all things But it makes sense. These days they have all kinds of different scents and flavours and when you have a curious child, they are going to put all kinds of things into their mouths.

When we arrived at the Saint Francis' Hospital ER, we told the ER Doctor there to check her blood alcohol level, and yes we did get weird looks, but they did it.

The results showed her blood alcohol level was 85% - six hours after we first took her. There's no telling what it would have been if we would have requested it at the first ER.

Since then, her school and a few surrounding schools have taken the liquid hand sanitizers out of all the lower grade classes, but what's to stop middle and high schoolers from ingesting this stuff?

After doing research on the Internet, we found out that it only takes about3 squirts of the stuff ingested to be fatal to a toddler.

For her blood alcohol level to be so high, it would be like someone her size drinking 120 proof liquor. So PLEASE PLEASE don't disregard this because we don't ever want another family to go through what ours has gone through.

A 54 year old woman had a heart attack and was taken to the hospital. While on the operating table she had a near death experience.

Seeing God she asked "Is my time up?"

God said, "No, you have another 43 years, 2 months and 8 days to live ."

Upon recovery, the woman decided to stay in the hospital and have a face-lift, liposuction, breast implants and a tummy tuck. She even had someone come in and change her hair color and brighten her teeth!

HOW TO STAY YOUNG

1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctors worry about them. That is why you pay "them "

2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.

3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle. "An idle mind is the devil ' s workshop." And the devil ' s name is Alzheimer ' s.

4. Enjoy the simple things.

5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.

6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person, who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive.

7. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it ' s family, pets,keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.

8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.

9 Don ' t take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county; to a foreign country but NOT to where the guilt is.

10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

Saya hampir membuang email ini namun saya telah diberi keberkatan untuk membaca terus hingga ke penghujung.
ALLAH , bila saya membaca e-mail ini, saya fikir saya tidak ada masa untuk ini.... Lebih lebih lagi diwaktu kerja.

Kemudian saya tersedar bahawa pemikiran semacam inilah yang .... Sebenarnya, menimbulkan pelbagai masaalah di dunia ini.

Kitacuba menyimpan ALLAH didalam MASJID pada hari Jumaat ... ...

Mungkin malam JUMAAT?

Dan sewaktu solat MAGRIB SAJA?
Kita suka ALLAH pada masa kita sakit....

Dan sudah pasti waktu ada kematian...
Walaubagaimanapun kita tidak ada masa atau ruang untuk ALLAH waktu bekerja atau bermain?

Kerana... Kita merasakan diwaktu itu kita mampu dan sewajarnya mengurus sendiri tanpa bergantung pada NYA.
Semoga ALLAH mengampuni aku kerana menyangka... ...

MEN NEVER LISTEN!!

In a Chicago hospital, a gentleman had made several attempts to get into the men's restroom, but it had always been occupied.

A nurse noticed his predicament. ' Sir', she said ' You may use the ladies room if you promise not to touch any of the buttons on the wall.'

He did what he needed to, and as he sat there he noticed the buttons he had promised not to touch. Each button was identified by letters: WW , WA , PP, and a red one labeled ATR. Who would know if he touched them?

He couldn't resist. He pushed WW. Warm water was sprayed gently upon his bottom. What a nice feeling, he thought. Men's restrooms don't have nice things like this.

Anticipating greater pleasure, he pushed the WA button. Warm air replaced the warm water, gently drying his underside. When this stopped, he pushed the PP button.

A large powder puff caressed his bottom adding a fragile scent of spring flower to this unbelievable pleasure. The ladies restroom was more than a restroom, it is tender loving pleasure.

When the powder puff completed its pleasure, he couldn't wait to push the ATR button which he knew would be supreme ecstasy. He was immediately knocked out by an excruciating pain.

Next thing he knew he opened his eyes, he was in a hospital bed, and a nurse was staring down at him.

'What happened?' he exclaimed. 'The last thing I remember was pushing the ATR button.' 'The button ATR is an Automatic Tampon Remover. Your testicles are now in this jar, sir.'

A holy man was having a conversation with God one day and said,
' God , I would like to know what Heaven and Hell are like.'

God led the holy man to two doors.

He opened one of the doors and the holy man looked in.

In the middle of the room was a large round table. In the middle of the table was a large pot of stew, which smelled delicious and made the holy man's mouth water.

The people sitting around the table were thin and sickly. They appeared to be famished.

They were holding spoons with very long handles, that were strapped to their arms and each found it impossible to reach into the pot of stew and take a spoonful.

But because the handle was longer than their arms, they could not get the spoons back into their mouths.

The holy man shuddered at the sight of their misery and suffering.

God said, 'You have seen Hell.'

They went to the next room and opened the door. It was exactly the same as the first one.

There was the large round table with the large pot of stew which made the holy man's mouth water.

The people were equipped with the same long-handled spoons, but here the people were well nourished and plump, laughing and talking. The holy man said, 'I don't understand.'

It is simple,' said God . 'It requires but one skill.

You see they have learned to feed each other, while the greedy think only of themselves.'

At home watch TV, go out bring HP.

No money, sell TV. Got money change HP.

Sometimes enjoy TV, but most of the time play with HP.

TV free for life but HP, if you don't pay, the services will be terminated

TV is big, bulky and most of the time old,

but hand phone is cute, slim, curvy and very portable at any time.

Operational cost for TV is often acceptable,

but for HP is high and often demanding.

Most important, TV got remote but HP don't have..

Last but not least,

TV do not have virus, but HP yes.. have VIRUS, once get it, HABIS LA. ..

so better choose TV

Upgrade to LCD or Plasma TV (Slim and Chun)

April Fools' Day: Origin and History

The uncertain origins of a foolish day

New Year's Day Moves

Ancient cultures, including those as varied as the Romans and the Hindus, celebrated New Year's Day on or around April 1. It closely follows the vernal equinox (March 20th or March 21st.) In medieval times, much of Europe celebrated March 25, the Feast of Annunciation, as the beginning of the new year.

In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII ordered a new calendar (the Gregorian Calendar) to replace the old Julian Calendar. The new calendar called for New Year's Day to be celebrated Jan. 1. That year, France adopted the reformed calendar and shifted New Year's day to Jan. 1. According to a popular explanation, many people either refused to accept the new date, or did not learn about it, and continued to celebrate New Year's Day on April 1. Other people began to make fun of these traditionalists, sending them on "fool's errands" or trying to trick them into believing something false. Eventually, the practice spread throughout Europe.

Problems With This Explanation

There are at least two difficulties with this explanation. The first is that it doesn't fully account for the spread of April Fools' Day to other European countries. The Gregorian calendar was not adopted by England until 1752, for example, but April Fools' Day was already well established there by that point. The second is that we have no direct historical evidence for this explanation, only conjecture, and that conjecture appears to have been made more recently.

Constantine and Kugel

Another explanation of the origins of April Fools' Day was provided by Joseph Boskin, a professor of history at Boston University. He explained that the practice began during the reign of Constantine, when a group of court jesters and fools told the Roman emperor that they could do a better job of running the empire. Constantine, amused, allowed a jester named Kugel to be king for one day. Kugel passed an edict calling for absurdity on that day, and the custom became an annual event.

"In a way," explained Prof. Boskin, "it was a very serious day. In those times fools were really wise men. It was the role of jesters to put things in perspective with humor."

This explanation was brought to the public's attention in an Associated Press article printed by many newspapers in 1983. There was only one catch: Boskin made the whole thing up. It took a couple of weeks for the AP to realize that they'd been victims of an April Fools' joke themselves.

Spring Fever

It is worth noting that many different cultures have had days of foolishness around the start of April, give or take a couple of weeks. The Romans had a festival named Hilaria on March 25, rejoicing in the resurrection of Attis. The Hindu calendar has Holi, and the Jewish calendar has Purim. Perhaps there's something about the time of year, with its turn from winter to spring, that lends itself to lighthearted celebrations.

Observances Around the World

April Fools' Day is observed throughout the Western world. Practices include sending someone on a "fool's errand," looking for things that don't exist; playing pranks; and trying to get people to believe ridiculous things.

The French call April 1 Poisson d'Avril, or "April Fish." French children sometimes tape a picture of a fish on the back of their schoolmates, crying "Poisson d'Avril" when the prank is discovered.

Whiskey has been around for centuries and is an integral part of many cultures in the world. But not many people know how this burnt, amber liquid came about.

The word derives from the Gaelic word for water, uisce. The full term is uisce-beatha, or "water of life". The French have a similar term, eau de vie, which has a broader connotation of more than just whiskey. Whiskey must have been pretty important to have its name derived from such a basic necessity.

Distillation goes back to the first millennium A.D., but whiskey only came about in the Middle Ages. It was probably invented in Ireland or Scotland sometime in the 15th century.

How whiskey is made

Whiskey is distilled from a beer (or mash) made from barley, corn, wheat, and/or rye. In the case of barley, the seeds can be soaked for a few days which cause them to germinate. The germination is then halted by applying dry heat in a kiln (fired with peat for Scotch or Japanese whiskey). This process causes enzymes to break down the grain's starch into simpler sugars and is called malting. Rye is also sometimes malted while corn and wheat are not malted.

The mash can be distilled once or several times resulting in a clear whiskey that is between 65 and 80% alcohol. This clear product is then aged in oak barrels that are charred by fire on the inside. The aging can last anywhere from 2 years to decades. Cheap bourbon can age 2 to 4 years, quality whiskies and Scotches sit for 6 to 18 years, and top of the line stuff can soak in the charred oak for 20 to 30 years or more. After emerging from more than a decade on oak, some Scotches are finished in old sherry, port, or Madeira barrels for several months. This "finishes" the Scotch whisky with some character from the wine that used to be in the barrels.

Regional variations

American whiskey Includes bourbon, rye, corn, and Tennessee whiskey. If aged for two years or more, the whiskey is designated as "straight". "Blended" whiskies are straight whiskies combined with neutral spirits, unaged whiskey, and/or flavorings.
Scotch whisky Aged a minimum of three years, distilled two or three time, and made from a single or a blend of barley and/or malted barley. The barley is smoked with varying amounts of peat smoke which imparts a smoky, musty flavor and aroma to the Scotch.
Irish whisky Usually distilled three times and aged a minimum of three years, though often the aging is much longer. Peat is rarely used, and barley is the predominant grain (malted and unmalted).
Canadian whisky Produced from a mash of grain and aged for a minimum of three years in small wooden barrels. Malted rye is often used in the mash which results in a fuller bodied whiskey.
Japanese whisky Similar to Scotch whiskey, Japanese whiskies use malted barley in the mash, but not as much peat as the Scottish distilleries do. There are quite a few single malts, but there are also some blends.

Tasting notes

The different styles of whiskey impart very different aromas and flavors to the taster. Bourbon usually has some vanilla notes that come from the oak. You can sometimes almost taste the char in older bourbons. Tennessee whiskey is charcoal filtered, so it smoothes out and refines the more rustic nature of bourbon. You may favor the rambling nature of bourbon or the more homogenized nature of Tennessee whiskey. I like them both. If you want to stick your toe in the deep end, try a rye whiskey. Old Overholt is a solid four-year whiskey with substantial rye body. Jim Beam (the yellow label), and Wild Turkey also make rye whiskies. Try rye whiskey in a Manhattan--the rye flavor complements the sweetness in the vermouth quite nicely.

Scotch can run the gamut from light single malts with faint peat notes like Glenlivet to more robust blends like Dewar's and Johnnie Walker. Then you get into single malts with fruity, flowery character that have been finished in sherry casks, to iodine and peat-laced malts like Lagavulin. At the fuller end of the spectrum there are the single malts made by the sea that have medicinal, salty notes and massive amount of peat such as Laphroaig. There is great variety in Scotch, and it can be quite a lot of fun discovering new malts that are quite different than what you're used to. This happened to me when I was pleasantly surprised with Laphroaig Quarter Cask.

In the United States, Irish whiskey usually means Jameson and Bushmills. These are light bodied whiskies that have some green (unmalted) grain character. They are quite good, and can be found in older and more complex versions. If you want to break out of the ruling duo, try Redbreast, a 12 year pure pot still whiskey. It is usually available in a good Irish bar. Or if you want to try a top flight Irish whiskey, Midleton Very Rare is quite good (and quite expensive).

For Canadian whiskey, you pretty much have Crown Royal and not much else (unless you're in Canada). Crown is pretty good stuff, though it's not as spicy, smoky, and fragrant as some American bourbons that I like. Canadian whiskey is usually lighter and softer than other whiskies.

Is it Whiskey or Whisky?

The two different spellings of the word--one with an "e" and one without--came about in the 1870's when Scottish distilleries were flooding the market with an inferior product. Back then, whiskey was spelled without the "e" everywhere. In order to differentiate themselves from the poor Scottish product, American and Irish distilleries started using an "e" when spelling whiskey on their labels. This continues to this day, though the quality of Scotch has improved greatly. A few American distilleries such as George Dickel and Maker's Mark don't use the "e" due to their Scottish roots.

Love and Desire in the Ancient Novel

Love is the one of the most represented themes in ancient Greek stories. It surrounds and captivates the readers’ interest in the story. As P.H. Epps observes in Greek Literature in Translation:

Through the mouth of Socrates Plato teaches that love is a universal principal manifesting itself in all nature, from the lowest plants and animals to the philosopher. In its lower forms it is physical and material; in its highest form it passes from the physical and material to the mystical contemplation of the good and the beautiful in whatever shape embodied (Epps 625).

In almost all the novels written in antiquity, love plays a role in some aspect. In the novels journeys come and go, but the love between the hero and heroine that surrounds all the voyages and challenges is forever there to stay.

In some instances, love in ancient novels is not really love (in the sense of two souls bonding together) in the beginning but more lust ("intense sexual desire") than anything. The lust comes from the impeccable beauty that the hero and heroine have been given from the gods. This kind of love is represented in the story of Chaereas and Callirhoe:

Chaereas was walking home from the gymnasium; he was radiant as a star, the flesh of exercise blooming on his bright countenance like gold on silver…at the corner of a narrow street the two [Chaereas and Callirhoe] walked straight into each other…at once they were both smitten with love…beauty had met nobility (Chariton 22).

This beauty always brings trouble and trials that have to be encountered and overcome, while the lovers stay committed to each other, before they can at last live a life of love together.

In almost all the novels there are many voyages that are destroyed by wrecks or overrun by pirates, separating the lovers for long periods of time. In Chaereas and Callirhoe, after the burial of Callirhoe, the pirate Theron breaks into the tomb and takes her away, which sends Chaereas on a journey to find her. Also in Leukippe and Kleitophon and An Ephesian Tale, the hero and heroine leave their homeland on a voyage and suffer terrible shipwrecks that separate them and send them on long journeys to find each other once again. As they tried to find each other, each of the lovers underwent their own trials, resisting others who tried to pursue their love. But they stay true to each other, waiting till the day they would meet again. And when at last they are reunited with one another they come together as though love had overcome all things.

Another form of love that is represented in ancient Greek novels such as Daphnis and Chloe, is a type of love directed by the gods. This is an innocent kind of love. In A Handbook of Greek Literature, H.J. Rose says:

. . . they [grew] up in pastoral surroundings having all the artificial prettiness to be expected…and in due course fall in love with each other, but are too innocent to know what love is…the young lovers are not like most of [the] heroes and heroines, simply puppets, [but are] swayed by emotions so strong as to resemble a violent illness (Rose 416).

Even thought this may seem to be the perfect kind of love, as in all the other love stories in Greek literature, Daphnis and Chloe too had trials to overcome. However, their trails were not as life threatening nor were they separated for such long periods, they instead were much gentler with no voyages to overcome. This style of love was portrayed by ancient authors as more common for the lower classes, where as other novels portray that the elite fell more into lust and desire for beauty.

Homosexuality plays a role in every ancient novel. The favorite hangout of young boys and men was the gymnasium. At the gymnasium, young boys looked up to the older stronger men. In An Ephesian Tale and Chaereas and Callirhoe, Habrocomes and Chaereas were represented as being the most admired and desired of all the men. Charles Beye states in Ancient Greek Literature and Society, “Homosexuality, however, was not reprehensible or ridiculous, unless it was coupled with effeminacy” also “ respectable aristocratic and monied males sought the company of handsome teenage boys. Emotional, intellectual, and physical ties grew strong… this relationship was the most serious in a man’s life” (Beye 106-107). In antiquity it seems that homosexuality was a very open subject among all of the people of this time and was totally acceptable for an older man to take a young man to be his own lover. “Male homosexuality, it sometimes seems, carried an ideological message of coversation…male homosexuality also reinforced the aristocratic emphasis on exclusiveness…partners in anal intercourse is tamed and bonded in a certain sense” (Beye 108). The girls in this period were not allowed to be seen in public, so therefore “it is no wonder that teenage boys became objects of sexual interest” (Beye 108). This behavior in antiquity was very accepted, but after a man reached a certain age or got married there was not any more room for homosexuality in his life.

In the ancient Greek novels, many writers have emphasized the force of love. Charles Beye writes that:

It has been suggested that love became so important…because as the frames of reference for the individual faded, as the support system of polis, religion, society failed, as the individual increasingly lost a sense of scale in his life, sensual experiences alone continued to validate him and make him feel a sense of self (Beye 275).

Love has so many different ways of showing itself. With Daphnis and Chloe it was an innocent love that built on a slow progressive feeling but with Habrocomes and Anthia, Leukippe and Kleitophon, and Chaereas and Callirhoe it was a lust for beauty that ended in love. But all in all, love is still love. In most of the ancient romances, love stories both entertain and express the way life was at that point in time. They show the way life was, because they focus on real people as well as gods and goddesses, to make the story all the more captivating.

Why do People Drink Alcohol?

No matter where you go, you likely notice there is always alcohol around in a social setting. Many homes today have bars, others have at least a couple of bottles on hand for their own use or to make sure they can put together drinks when company shows up.

But, why do people drink alcohol?

Research has shown that the number one answer to this question is what you probably would expect, socialization. Many people drink as their way to fit in with others. It often boosts their confidence and helps reduce stresses they may usually have in a social setting.

The next highest reason many people drink is because they like the taste. Be it someone with a love for beer or mixed drinks, they seem to enjoy the taste.

Next, people drink to relax, or feel at ease. One of the problems with this is that many people get used to feeling at ease and relaxed and start to rely on alcohol to make them feel that way on a daily basis.

To get a buzz or get drink are the next reasons many people like to drink, followed by drinking out of peer pressure.

When analysing why we drink, it is also important to consider the effects of alcohol.

None of the much flaunted appeals of cigarette advertisers, such as superior taste and mildness, induces us to become smokers or to choose one brand in preference to another. Despite the emphasis put on such qualities by advertisers, they are minor considerations. This is one of the first facts we discovered when we asked several hundred people, from all walks of life, why they liked to smoke cigarettes. Smoking is as much a psychological pleasure as it is a physiological satisfaction. As one of our respondents explained: "It is not the taste that counts. It's that sense of satisfaction you get from a cigarette that you can't get from anything else."

Smoking is Fun

What is the nature of this psychological pleasure? It can be traced to the universal desire for self-expression. None of us ever completely outgrows his childhood. We are constantly hunting for the carefree enjoyment we knew as children. As we grew older, we had to subordinate our pleasures to work and to the necessity for unceasing effort. Smoking, for many of us, then, became a substitute for our early habit of following the whims of the moment; it becomes a legitimate excuse for interrupting work and snatching a moment of pleasure. "You sometimes get tired of working intensely," said an accountant whom we interviewed, "and if you sit back for the length of a cigarette, you feel much fresher afterwards. It's a peculiar thing, but I wouldn't think of just sitting back without a cigarette. I guess a cigarette somehow gives me a good excuse."

Smoking is a Reward

Most of us are hungry for rewards. We want to be patted on the back. A cigarette is a reward that we can give ourselves as often as we wish. When we have done anything well, for instance, we can congratulate ourselves with a cigarette, which certifies, in effect, that we have been "good boys." We can promise ourselves: "When I have finished this piece of work, when I have written the last page of my report, I'll deserve a little fun. I'll have a cigarette."

The first and last cigarette in the day are especially significant rewards. The first one, smoked right after breakfast, is a sort of anticipated recompense. The smoker has work to do, and he eases himself into the day's activities as pleasantly as possible. He gives himself a little consolation prize in advance, and at the same time manages to postpone the evil hour when he must begin his hard day's work. The last cigarette of the day is like "closing a door." It is something quite definite. One smoker explained: "I nearly always smoke a cigarette before going to bed. That finishes the day. I usually turn the light out after I have smoked the last cigarette, and then turn over to sleep."

Smoking is often merely a conditioned reflex. Certain situations, such as coming out of the subway, beginning and ending work, voluntary and involunatary interruptions of work, feelings of hunger, and many others regulate the timetable of smoking. Often a smoker may not even want a cigarette particularly, but he will see someone else take one and then he feels that he must have one, too.

While to many people smoking is fun, and a reward in itself, it more often accompanies other pleasures. At meals, a cigarette is somewhat like another course. In general, smoking introduces a holiday spirit into everyday living. It rounds out other forms of enjoyment and makes them one hundred per cent satisfactory.

Smoking is Oral Pleasure

As we have said, to explain the pleasure derived from smoking as taste experience alone, is not sufficient. For one thing, such an explanation leaves out the powerful erotic sensitivity of the oral zone. Oral pleasure is just as fundamental as sexuality and hunger. It functions with full strength from earliest childhood. There is a direct connection between thumbsucking and smoking. "In school I always used to chew a pencil or a pen," said a journalist, in reply to our questions. "You should have seen the collection I had. They used to be chewed to bits. Whenever I try to stop smoking for a while, I get something to chew on, either a pipe or a menthol cigarette. You just stick it in your mouth and keep on sucking. And I also chew a lot of gum when I want to cut down on smoking...."

The satisfied expression on a smoker's face when he inhales the smoke is ample proof of his sensuous thrill. The immense power of the yearning for a cigarette, especially after an enforced abstinence, is acknowledged by habitual smokers. One of our respondents said: "When you don't get a cigarette for a long time and you are kind of on pins, the first drag goes right down to your heels."

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

Once upon a time . . . in a great castle, a Prince's daughter grew up happy and contented, in spite of a jealous stepmother. She was very pretty, with blue eyes and long black hair. Her skin was delicate and fair, and so she was called Snow White. Everyone was quite sure she would become very beautiful. Though her stepmother was a wicked woman, she too was very beautiful, and the magic mirror told her this every day, whenever she asked it.

"Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the loveliest lady in the land?" The reply was always; "You are, your Majesty," until the dreadful day when she heard it say, "Snow White is the loveliest in the land." The stepmother was furious and, wild with jealousy, began plotting to get rid of her rival. Calling one of her trusty servants, she bribed him with a rich reward to take Snow White intc the forest, far away from the Castle. Then, unseen, he was to put her to death. The greedy servant, attracted to the reward, agreed to do this deed, and he led the innocent little girl away. However, when they came to the fatal spot, the man's courage failed him and, leaving Snow White sitting beside a tree, he mumbled an excuse and ran off. Snow White was all alone in the forest.

Night came, but the servant did not return. Snow White, alone in the dark forest, began to cry bitterly. She thought she could feel terrible eyes spying on her, and she heard strange sounds and rustlings that made her heart thump. At last, overcome by tiredness, she fell asleep curled under a tree.

Snow White slept fitfully, wakening from time to time with a start and staring into the darkness round her. Several times, she thought she felt something, or somebody touch her as she slept.

At last, dawn woke the forest to the song of the birds, and Snow White too, awoke. A whole world was stirring to life and the little girl was glad to see how silly her fears had been. However, the thick trees were like a wall round her, and as she tried to find out where she was, she came upon a path. She walked along it, hopefully. On she walked till she came to a clearing. There stood a strange cottage, with a tiny door, tiny windows and a tiny chimney pot. Everything about the cottage was much tinier than it ought to be. Snow White pushed the door open.

"l wonder who lives here?" she said to herself, peeping round the kitchen. "What tiny plates! And spoons! There must be seven of them, the table's laid for seven people." Upstairs was a bedroom with seven neat little beds. Going back to the kitchen, Snow White had an idea.

"I'll make them something to eat. When they come home, they'll be glad to find a meal ready." Towards dusk, seven tiny men marched homewards singing. But when they opened the door, to their surprise they found a bowl of hot steaming soup on the table, and the whole house spick and span. Upstairs was Snow White, fast asleep on one of the beds. The chief dwarf prodded her gently.

"Who are you?" he asked. Snow White told them her sad story, and tears sprang to the dwarfs' eyes. Then one of them said, as he noisily blew his nose:

"Stay here with us!"

"Hooray! Hooray!" they cheered, dancing joyfully round the little girl. The dwarfs said to Snow White:

"You can live here and tend to the house while we're down the mine. Don't worry about your stepmother leaving you in the forest. We love you and we'll take care of you!" Snow White gratefully accepted their hospitality, and next morning the dwarfs set off for work. But they warned Snow White not to open the door to strangers.

Meanwhile, the servant had returned to the castle, with the heart of a roe deer. He gave it to the cruel stepmother, telling her it belonged to Snow White, so that he could claim the reward. Highly pleased, the stepmother turned again to the magic mirror. But her hopes were dashed, for the mirror replied: "The loveliest in the land is still Snow White, who lives in the seven dwarfs' cottage, down in the forest." The stepmother was beside herself with rage.

"She must die! She must die!" she screamed. Disguising herself as an old peasant woman, she put a poisoned apple with the others in her basket. Then, taking the quickest way into the forest, she crossed the swamp at the edge of the trees. She reached the bank unseen, just as Snow White stood waving goodbye to the seven dwarfs on their way to the mine.

Snow White was in the kitchen when she heard the sound at the door: KNOCK! KNOCK!

"Who's there?" she called suspiciously, remembering the dwarfs advice.

"I'm an old peasant woman selling apples," came the reply.

"I don't need any apples, thank you," she replied.

"But they are beautiful apples and ever so juicy!" said the velvety voice from outside the door.

"I'm not supposed to open the door to anyone," said the little girl, who was reluctant to disobey her friends.

"And quite right too! Good girl! If you promised not to open up to strangers, then of course you can't buy. You are a good girl indeed!" Then the old woman went on.

"And as a reward for being good, I'm going to make you a gift of one of my apples!" Without a further thought, Snow White opened the door just a tiny crack, to take the apple.

"There! Now isn't that a nice apple?" Snow White bit into the fruit, and as she did, fell to the ground in a faint: the effect of the terrible poison left her lifeless instantaneously.

Now chuckling evilly, the wicked stepmother hurried off. But as she ran back across the swamp, she tripped and fell into the quicksand. No one heard her cries for help, and she disappeared without a trace.

Meanwhile, the dwarfs came out of the mine to find the sky had grown dark and stormy. Loud thunder echoed through the valleys and streaks of lightning ripped the sky. Worried about Snow White they ran as quickly as they could down the mountain to the cottage.

There they found Snow White, lying still and lifeless, the poisoned apple by her side. They did their best to bring her around, but it was no use.

They wept and wept for a long time. Then they laid her on a bed of rose petals, carried her into the forest and put her in a crystal coffin.

Each day they laid a flower there.

Then one evening, they discovered a strange young man admiring Snow White's lovely face through the glass. After listening to the story, the Prince (for he was a prince!) made a suggestion.

"If you allow me to take her to the Castle, I'll call in famous doctors to waken her from this peculiar sleep. She's so lovely . . . I'd love to kiss her. . . !" He did, and as though by magic, the Prince's kiss broke the spell. To everyone's astonishment, Snow White opened her eyes. She had amazingly come back to life! Now in love, the Prince asked Snow White to marry him, and the dwarfs reluctantly had to say good bye to Snow White.

From that day on, Snow White lived happily in a great castle. But from time to time, she was drawn back to visit the little cottage down in the forest.
